Matrox Dual Head to GoWe have used the Martox DualHead2go device at a couple of youth event in Reading - What this provided was a cheap and simple way to have a 16 by 6 foot screen! -that’s pretty wide. The reason behind all this is to provide a far cheaper alternative to 'soft edge' video projection.

(The Matrox Dual Head 2 Go product is something that we dont't sell, however this article may be useful if you are looking at ways to use this hardware) However do contact us if you would like to hire one.

About the Matrox DualHead2Go

dualhead-2go-setup2The device is a small box that you plug your PC (or Apple Powerbook in our case) to via the VGA port. The computer sees the device as a ‘monitor’ with a resolution of 2048×768, which is twice the width of a ‘normal’ screen. …Now, the box has 2 VGA ports as it’s output, and the box splits the 2048×768* image in to 2 halves. Threfore it splites the image over to monitors - or in our case 2 projectors - The image to the right is from the Matrox webMatrox web site and shows it working.

*the Dualhead2Go can actually go up to 2560×1024, but for our needs 2048×768 is best, as 1024×768 is the native resolution of our video projectors.

How we used it

I connected the DualHead2Go in to an Apple Powerbook and used Grid to play back videos. The connected 2 projectors to the DualHead2Go via 2 30 metre VGA cables. -we didn’t need any signal amplifiers.
The videos were in HD resolution and I re-compresed them as MJPEG/Quicktime at best quality. The Quality and Playback was fine - there was no problem with stuttering etc, and the actual quality was OK - there was a bit of pixelation on some of the videos.
The photos show a colour difference between the 2 screens - in pratice this wasn’t seen by the human eye. -however we were using different projectors, so this was expected. I now how 2 projectors of the same make/model so next time this won’t be a problem!

For song words and DVD playback during the event, we used 2 slightly smaller screens on each side. We just played different videos on the centre screens depending on the situation - ie during the upbeat songs we had a faster moving video etc. During the talk we actuall paused the video so it was just a still image.

We had lots of positive feedback about the setup. Next time I’d like to make better use of the 4 screens and intergrate them better. I’d like to produce video presentations that make use of all 4 screens…
